Gregorian Chant: Music for the Soul, ()
February 07, 2011

In a world where everything is fast paced and it takes a grand effort to step back and collect the elements of the soul; the Gregorian chant serves as a relaxing and spiritually enhancing exercise to accompany meditation. Music for the soul is music that seeks a higher calling. And where monks in monasteries have used the beautiful hymns, so can you here on Gabriola Island.

We meet, a small band of us, every Wednesday afternoon.  In a semi-circle, we listen, learn, and sing in Latin under gentle instruction.  Over the period of an hour or so, I do believe we are transformed into wholeness, through an ethereal level of being present in this lovely meditative state.   All is good.

What is most compelling about the Gregorian Chant? It is a form of prayer.

Named after Pope Gregory I, the Gregorian chants have been created for all sorts of religious celebrations. Whether they are psalmodic, antiphonal or responsorial; it is an invitation to prayer and to reconnect with the source of all life. The beauty of the Gregorian chant is the effect it can have towards a congregation. When in prayer, those who understand most what they wish to pray, are moved even more under the calming rhythm and melody of the Gregorian chant.

Step away from the hustle of your everyday life, and take a moment to absorb the sound of nature and the sound of prayer. There is nothing quite like being in spirit and reacquainting yourself with your inner calling.
